A 16th century beaded cemí was found covered with indigenous shell beads.  While beaded handwork is attributed to Native Americans of North America, it's not commonly known that the Taino people also carried this artform in their culture.  The cemí includes a person in the Taino meditative posture with a movable bat mask.  Bats are attributed to the underworld and it's lord, Maquetaurie Guayaba.  This geometric design is inspired by the pattern found across this beaded cemí.
